I am thrilled to be one of the chapter authors in this book, and while I have nothing to gain from its sales, it is an incredibly important text. My chapter is titled "A Design Philosophy for Emergency Management," and it endeavors to establish a guiding and foundational philosophy that can guide its practice moving forward. Other design disciplines have recognized flaws in their practice of design, and scholars have made efforts to fold a new design philosophy under existing design work and redirect its use.
When this book was written, design was just emerging in the field of emergency management, so there was a rare opportunity to establish a design philosophy at the outset of design's integration into practice. Writing this chapter provided the space to decide how to craft a philosophy that would benefit emergency managers seeking to use design ethically, responsibly, and with a focus toward the future.
